Vol. 108 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Strike Tendencies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether, in view of the urgent necessity of bringing about harmony and whole-hearted co-operation among all those upon whom increasing production depends, he will take immediate steps to bring into consultation with the Government, representatives of employers and workers generally, with a view to ascertaining what are the facts which give rise to the present strike tendencies, and, if possible, take such action as may remove this tendency which is interfering with production and causing very great hardship to the country generally.

I am very willing, at all times, to give what aid I can in bringing about the harmony and co-operation to which the question refers. I am in frequent contact with representatives of employers and employees.

The Industrial Relations Act was enacted by the Oireachtas after full consideration and with the approval of all parties as the best method which could be envisaged of bringing about and maintaining industrial peace. The position created by recent developments in this regard is at present under consideration by the Government.
