Vol. 108 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Consumption of Milk on Farms.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the estimated percentage of our total milk production which was consumed on farms in 1938 and 1946, or the latest year for which figures are available.

The estimated percentage of total milk production which was consumed by persons on farms without process of sale (i.e., as milk and as farmers' butter) was 33 in 1938 and 38 in 1946.

It is estimated that total consumption by persons on farms (i.e., including creamery butter, condensed milk and cheese) formed 56 per cent. of total production of milk in 1946. The corresponding percentage for 1938 is not available.

Consumption by live stock is estimated at 12 per cent. of total production in 1938 and 13 per cent. in 1946.
