Vol. 108 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Farm.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that a farm of over 200 acres at Cottage, Ballyhaunis, has been unoccupied for some considerable time; and that there are a number of congested tenants, whose valuations, in some cases, are as low as 10/-, anxious that this land should be acquired, with a view to its distribution for the relief of congestion.

Mr. Boland

The position regarding this estate is unchanged and the Land Commission has taken no further action.

Is the Minister aware that this land was purchased some time last October? Since then the gentleman who purchased this holding has not resided in it. It is a nonresidential holding. The neighbours in the locality have a valuation down to 3/6 and they are very much in need of land. Does the Minister intend to acquire this with a view to supplementing those small holdings and enabling those people to make a livelihood?

Mr. Boland

I cannot add anything to it, but the Deputy must know that the Minister does not acquire the land. It is the Land Commission which does it. The Deputy is long enough here to know that.
