Vol. 108 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Potato Root Eel-Worm.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the inroads of the potato root eel-worm in the potato-growing districts of Donegal, especially along the seaboard where farms are small for crop rotation; and if his Department's research workers have discovered any remedy to cope with this growing menace to potato cultivation.

There has been no material change in the position since the Deputy asked a similar question in 1942 and was informed that the eel-worm pest existed in a small area in South-West Donegal and caused a certain amount of damage. There is no evidence of any increase in the infestation and a good average crop is expected in the area this year. So far no practicable remedy, other than resting infested land, has been discovered in this or other countries where research work on the pest has been carried out.
