Vol. 108 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Meat Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the price of the several cuts and descriptions of meat in Dublin, as authorised by him in August, 1946; and the present price of these commodities.

The prices of several cuts and descriptions of meat in Dublin in August, 1946, the prices approved by me in February, 1947, and the average prices in October, 1947, will appear in a tabular statement which I propose to circulate with the Official Report. In February of the current year I approved certain increases in the prices of beef and mutton in view of the then existing cattle market prices. For practical reasons the regulation of beef and mutton prices in Dublin has in the past been arranged by agreement with the Dublin Master Victuallers' Association and not by formal Order, but this system has proved increasingly difficult to maintain in view of wide fluctuations in market prices. I understand that present prices charged by some victuallers in Dublin exceed those approved by me early this year, but I am aware that market prices have also increased. The whole question of meat prices has been under examination in my Department for some time past, with a view to devising some more formal and effective system of control, and inquiries are in progress to establish whether the existing retail prices of beef and mutton are justified, having regard to the average market prices obtaining.

Following is the tabular statement:—
