Vol. 108 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Baltimore-Skibbereen Train Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the train service between Baltimore and Skibbereen in inadequate being limited to one train each way on the Saturday of each week; and if he will direct Córas Iompair Éireann to have a mid-week service provided to supplement the existing service.

As I have already explained in reply to a number of recent questions, Córas Iompair Éireann coal stocks are substantially less than at this time last year. The company have to conserve their fuel supplies so that they can provide adequate main line services for grain, beet and other essential commodities. I do not propose to issue any directions to Córas Iompair Éireann in relation to this service.

Will the Minister say if, when the coal position has improved, there will be a better service on this line between Skibbereen and Baltimore?

I have no doubt that, when Córas Iompair Éireann are in a position to do so by reason of increased coal stocks and better supplies of transport equipment, their services will be generally improved.

I wonder is the Minister aware that the residents of Cape Clear and other districts anxious to learn Irish, were in the habit of going into the Cape to get a perfect knowledge of the language, but, owing to the lack of travelling facilities, they have not been able to do so this year?
