Vol. 108 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Timber for Housebuilding.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the timber made available to the Wexford Corporation for housebuilding has been rejected as unsuitable by the corporation's borough surveyor and by an inspector of the Department of Local Government; and whether he is prepared to assist the corporation to secure timber of a suitable quality.

I am not aware that timber which was procured for building houses for the Wexford Corporation was rejected as unsuitable.

There are now in the country sufficient supplies of timber for any housebuilding work in progress, but it is a matter for the applicant for a timber purchase permit to nominate the merchant with whom he wishes to deal and to select from the stocks held by the nominated merchant timber of a quality suitable for his purposes.

I will be prepared to grant a permit under the Control of Timber Orders to the Wexford Corporation, or to the contractor engaged on the housing scheme promoted by the Wexford Corporation, which will authorise the purchase of any quantity of timber that may be needed to replace defective material purchased under the permits which have been issued.
