Vol. 108 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Thorn Pier (Letterkenny).

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is intended to carry out developments or repair works at the old Thorn Pier, at the port of Letterkenny, County Donegal; and if so, when this work will be put in hand.

The question of development works at the Thorn, the port of Letterkenny, has been deferred pending a decision as to the works which should be carried out at Rathmullan. A survey has recently been carried out at Rathmullan and a decision will shortly be taken.

Am I to understand from the Minister's reply that, in the event of a decision being taken to develop Rathmullan, no development work will be carried out at Thorn Pier, or is it possible that both may be under repair?

The Deputy is not to take that from my reply.

I understood the Minister to say that, pending the result of the survey at Rathmullan, a decision cannot be taken in regard to Thorn Pier. May I assume that some repairs will ultimately be done at Thorn Pier, whatever the position may be in regard to Rathmullan?

I have said the matter will be decided when the survey in progress is concluded.

Is the Minister aware that 15 years ago he declared at a Letterkenny meeting that, as soon as he was returned to power, repairs would be carried out at the pier adequate to admit transatlantic liners?

I made no such declaration.

I heard you.

The Deputy's reputation for truth is not being enhanced.
