Vol. 108 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Pensions.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state when it is proposed to introduce proposals for legislation to increase the pensions of members of the Garda Síochána who retired prior to the granting of increased pay to members of the force last year.

I intend to introduce shortly a measure which will enable the pensions of men who retired between 1st July, 1940, and 31st October, 1946, to be adjusted in accordance with the increases in pay granted as from 1st January, 1945, and 1st November, 1946.

asked the Minister for Justice whether his attention has been drawn to the growing inadequacy of pensions granted to the widows and orphans of Gardaí, coupled with the fact that they are not eligible for contributory pensions under the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Act; and whether he will take steps to review these pension rates.

Mr. Boland

I am aware of the position in this matter and it is the subject of discussion between my Department and the Department of Finance.

And may we have hopes that the Minister for Justice will prevail?

Mr. Boland

That remains to be seen.
