Vol. 108 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Carlow Town.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the fact that official letters from his Department use both Muinebeag and Bagenalstown in reference to a town in County Carlow, he will state the official name of the town.

In 1920 the town commissioners adopted a resolution purporting to change the name of Bagenalstown to Muinebeag. At the time there was no statutory authority to change the name. The name Muinebeag is used by the Department in communicating with the town commissioners and in official reports. A procedure by which the name of a town can be changed with legal effect has been provided by Section 76 of the Local Government Act, 1946.
