Vol. 108 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acreage and Yield of Wheat Crop.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state: (a) the acreage of wheat sown in the year 1946; (b) the estimated yield per acre, in barrels, of such wheat; and (c) the total quantity of wheat available from the 1946 harvest for (i) milling into flour, and (ii) the quantity retained for seed in that year.

(a) The area of wheat sown for harvesting in the year 1946 was 642,595 acres.

(b) The yield was estimated at 5¾ barrels per acre.

(c) The total quantity delivered for milling was 337,000 tons of green wheat, of which 316,000 tons were supplied to-flour mills and the remainder to small local mills. The quantity retained for seed is estimated at 78,500 tons (green).

When the Minister says "5¾ barrels per acre" does he mean per statute acre or per Irish acre?
