Vol. 108 No. 15

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take the business in the following order:—First, No. 1. Then it is proposed on the adjournment motion to resume the discussion concerning the trade agreement and it is proposed that that discussion terminate at 6 p.m., and that the following be then taken:—No. 25, Nos. 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17.

On that, the Tánaiste has indicated that after the motion on the adjournment the first thing will be the Seanad Electoral (Panel Members) Bill, 1947, Second Stage. That Bill only reached the Deputies, as far as the country is concerned, on Monday. I indicated yesterday that we were anxious to facilitate the Government to get through business of importance before the dissolution, but the first indication was only given this morning that it was proposed to move this Bill to the front of the discussion. I have no objection to hearing the Minister speak on this Bill to-day, but no one expected that it would be advanced in this particular way. I may be asking for facilities to get a reasoned amendment to the Second Reading and to have a motion discussed, something to the effect that the Dáil wishes to postpone the Second Reading of this Bill for a period of 12 months. It will probably facilitate the Minister in taking the Second Reading to-day if we got an indication that the amendment will be accepted.

I do not see any objection to accepting such an amendment.

I will move an amendment to that effect.

Will that amendment be moved at 6 p.m.?

Are we going to sit to-morrow?

I think it would be desirable to sit to-morrow. If the business as ordered should be concluded, of course, we should not.
