Vol. 108 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Fresh Bread.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is now prepared to withdraw the Order prohibiting the sale of fresh bread in Dublin and Bray.

Following further consultations with representatives of the bakery trade I have decided not to revoke the Emergency Powers (Fresh Bread and Prohibition of Returns) Order, 1946, for the present. I have indicated to the trade, however, that the Order will, at a stage, cease to have effect, and that I can hold out no prospect that it will be perpetuated by legislation.

Can the Minister say when the Order will cease to have effect?

When the Supplies and Services Act lapses.

The Minister could not give a definite date?

I met representatives of the master bakers and the trade unions concerned and they convinced me that very considerable dislocation would be caused if the Order were repealed now. I brought to their notice the fact that the Order would cease to have effect when the temporary legislation came to an end and that they would have to make such internal arrangements in their trade as to obviate the difficulties they foresee before that happens.
