Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wearing Apparel.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, in respect of each description of wearing apparel: (i) the quantities imported, during each quarter of 1946 and 1947 to the end of September; (ii) the dates from which such garments were admitted free of duty; (iii) an approximate estimate of the amount of duty lost thereby; and (iv) the estimated effect on employment in the clothing trades of the discontinuance of duty.

The Deputy will, I am sure, appreciate that the figures asked for at part (i) of the question cannot be supplied at short notice as there are almost 300 classifications of personal clothing and wearing apparel in the import list. The information can, however, be obtained from the Trade and Shipping Statistics for each quarter of 1946, and for the first two quarters of 1947. The figures for the September quarter will be published shortly.

The duties on personal clothing and wearing apparel have been suspended since the 13th December, 1946, and are still suspended with certain exceptions.

The third part of the Deputy's question should be addressed to the Minister for Finance.

The suspension of the duties on personal clothing and wearing apparel does not appear to have had any adverse effect on employment in the clothing trades.

Could the Minister say if any quota restrictions apply at present to articles of wearing apparel?

There are some, but, if the Deputy wants particulars, he had better put down a question.
