Vol. 109 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Proposed Cork Aerodrome Site.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if a decision has been arrived at as to which, if any, of the proposed sites for an aerodrome at Cork has been selected; if not, if he is in a position to state when a definite decision may be expected; and to what extent the Government will subsidise the project.

Before a decision could be made regarding an airport in the vicinity of Cork City it was necessary to find a location which would meet reasonably the various operating requirements. For this purpose a survey was carried out of all possible sites within a 15 mile radius of the city, but no fully satisfactory site could be found. Two places whose physical characteristics appeared to be the best available were selected for further examination. Meteorological observations have been made over a period at these two sites. A decision as to the most suitable site will be based not only on the meteorological data but on consideration of the type of air transport operations which are likely to be served by an airport at Cork. Both aspects of the question are at present under examination in my Department.

The question of subsidy cannot be decided until the present examination has been completed and estimates can be prepared as to the cost of constructing and maintaining an airport at the selected site.
