Vol. 109 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Telephone Kiosk.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he has received representations, from residents at Loughshinny, County Dublin, for the provision of a public telephone kiosk in the area; and if he will state when it is proposed to provide a kiosk.

As intimated in a previous reply to the late Deputy Fogarty, the erection of a telephone kiosk at Loughshinny would not be warranted as the receipts would be insufficient to cover working expenses.

I may add that public telephone facilities are provided in rural areas by the installation of call offices in post offices. As there is no post office at Loughshinny and the establishment of one there is not warranted, I regret that it is not possible to arrange for public telephone service.

The only solution of the difficulty would be for some person, or organisation, to rent an exchange line to one of the houses in the village.

Assuming that can be arranged, can the Minister promise an early service?

That is another question; I would have to see what the position in relation to staffing is.
