Vol. 109 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Revaluation of Lands in Offaly.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will cause the lands convenient to the Brosna at Lusmagh, Banagher and Meelick to be revalued by the Commissioner of Valuation as these lands are subject to constant severe flooding, their owners derive no benefit from them, and are unable to pay the high rates accruing from the high valuations in the Barony of Garrycastle.

Under Section 4 of the Valuation (Ireland) Amendment Act, 1854, as adapted, requests for revision of valuations must be made through the local authority; neither I nor the Commissioner of Valuation has any power of initiative in the matter.

If the lands to which the Deputy refers are listed in the ordinary way for revision of valuation, the Commissioner of Valuation will have them examined and any part of them found to be wholly useless through constant flooding will be shown separately in the Valuation List and described as useless. It will be open to the county council to forgo the collection of rates on the parts so described.

To have the lands listed for revision of valuation the owners or occupiers should apply to the county secretary before the 15th June indicating the ground on which revision is sought.

I understand the position has already been explained to the Deputy by the Valuation Office.
