Vol. 109 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Drain of Emigration.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state if, in view of the serious drain of emigration on the population of this country, especially of young people, he will make representations to the British Government, with a view to securing the withdrawal, at an early date, of the Office of the United Kingdom Liaison Officer for Labour.

The suggestion contained in the question is not warranted. The official referred to does not induce people to emigrate or act in any other way contrary to our regulations. In fact, the work of his office is of material advantage to us in preventing emigration harmful to essential production here and in protecting the interests of Irish workers who have decided to seek employment in Britain.

Arising out of the Taoiseach's reply, in view of the serious tide of emigration from this country, has the Government any plans to prevent its continuance and to provide full-time employment?

That is a separate question.
