Vol. 109 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Insurance Premiums on Cars.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the insurance premiums on private motor cars and commercial vehicles are to be raised by 20 per cent. and 25 per cent., respectively, as from the 1st January, 1948; that such an increase will bear heavily on the commercial community and professional users of cars, such as doctors; and if he will have the matter examined to ascertain if he is empowered to control such increases.

The insurance companies concerned informed me of their proposals to increase insurance premiums on private motor cars and commercial vehicles as from the 1st January, 1948. The companies have submitted figures to me showing the results of their motor insurance business and as these figures justify the increased rates proposed I do not intend to have recourse to the powers conferred on me by Section 107 of the Insurance Act, 1936.
