Vol. 109 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income-Tax Assessments.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state, in respect of each year from 1939 to 1946, inclusive: (a) the number of persons in respect of whom Schedule E assessments to income-tax were made by the Revenue Commissioners; and (b) the number of Schedule D assessees.

Income-tax statistics are not compiled in such a manner as to enable the information in question to be furnished, but I may inform the Deputy that the number of taxpayers under all schedules for the year 1946-47 was estimated to have been 133,000.

Is it not a fact that the figures asked for in this question are supplied annually to the Minister for Finance for budgeting purposes?

How do you estimate your Budget then if you do not have these statements?

It is the Revenue Commissioners' job to give me the figure and they are pretty well nearly always right.
