Vol. 109 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Memorandum on Blind Welfare

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has received a memorandum on blind welfare from the National Council for the Blind setting out a comprehensive scheme for the welfare of the blind; if he has considered that scheme; and if he is prepared to adopt it.

The memorandum referred to has been received and is appreciated. The present provisions for the blind will be reviewed in connection with a scheme of social legislation that is being prepared in my Department and the suggestions contained in the memorandum submitted by the National Council for the Blind will receive full consideration in connection with that review. Until the review is completed and decisions taken on all the inter-related matters it will not, of course, be possible to make any announcement such as the Deputy seeks.

Would the Minister say when the review will be completed?

As I have already stated in the Dáil on a number of occasions, the review will be completed in February and the scheme will be produced then.
