Vol. 109 No. 6

Estimates for Public Services. - Vote 41—Local Government.

I move:—

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £18,845 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1948, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Office of the Minister for Local Government, including Grants to Local Authorities and other Expenses in connection with Housing, Miscellaneous Grants and a Grant-in-Aid.

The scope of this Supplementary Estimate is indicated in Part III of Estimate under sub-head 1 (ii). It, in fact, provides the money which it is anticipated would be necessary to give effect to the provisions of the Housing Bill which we have just passed. Deputies will see in Part II of the Estimate that the total cost of operating the Bill between now and 31st March will be about £50,000. As we have savings on other sub-heads amounting to £31,155 the net increase in the Estimate in my Department is £18,845.

Vote agreed to.
