Vol. 110 No. 2

Supplementary Estimates. - Vote 49—Science and Art.

Tairgim:—

Go ndeonfar suim breise nach mó ná £5,000 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfas chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch an 31 Márta, 1948, chun Tuarastal agus Costas na bhForas Eolaíochta agus Ealaíon, chun Seirbhísí Ilghnéitheacha áirithe Oideachais agus Cultúir, chun Cuimhneacháin Céad Blian Thomáis Dáibhis agus Ghluaiseacht na nÉireannach Og, agus Ildeontas-igCabhair.

Under sub-head A provision is made for an additional sum of £1,400 for fittings and materials for the National Museum. During the emergency a considerable amount of the material in the National Museum was stored and, arising out of its return to its place, a number of sections of the National Museum have been under reorganisation and rearrangement. A number of cases that were originally used were found to need remodelling and there has been an unexpected expenditure in connection with the rearrangement of the Museum. Two hundred pounds arise out of certain bills for printing that have now to be paid and which were not expected to have to be paid in connection with the Centenary Commemoration of Thomas Davis.

There has been a reduction in the amount of money expected now under Appropriations-in-Aid compared with the original Estimate. Portion of that arises from the fact that the fees for tuition in the National College of Art have declined. Some time ago, there was, I think, an increase in the fees paid for students at the college but the fees have since declined.

There has been a certain falling off in the payments for genealogical researches and arising out of the difficulty of publishing Irish publications. The amount of sales of Irish publications has fallen off to some extent. That means that the Appropriations-in-Aid which will be coming in this year will not be as great as were expected. That explains the additional sum required under sub-head D.

Vote put and agreed to.
