Vol. 110 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Telephone Services.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he will consider taking immediate steps to improve telephone services and make telephones available to all applicants in view of the urgent need for these services and the substantial revenue to the State which these services would provide.

For the improvement of the telephone service additional trunk lines are being provided in order of the greatest need, and many telephone exchanges have been extended so as to give better service to subscribers.

Special measures are being taken to provide telephone service this year for almost all the applicants who were waiting on the 31st of December last. There were approximately 7,000 such cases on that date. Applications received since that date will be dealt with subsequently.

Is that due to lack of supplies?

Not exactly, but I am reorganising the whole scheme of telephone service in order to give better results from the same number of men employed.
