Vol. 110 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Stamp Duties.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the increased stamp duties imposed by the Finance (No. 2) Act, 1947, have caused considerable hardship to Irish citizens and are a serious obstacle to the purchase of their homes by those who are not in affluent circumstances, and if, in consequence, he will give consideration to the removal of these duties as soon as circumstances permit.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he proposes to reduce the present rate of stamp duties on conveyances to Irish nationals.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 27 and 28 together.

The effects of the increases in stamp duties provided for by the Finance (No. 2) Act of last year are a matter that naturally has been engaging my attention. When adequate opportunity has been afforded for judging the operation of those increases I hope to be in a position to consider their future in the light of the general Exchequer position.
