Vol. 110 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reenard Point Pier.

asked the Minister for Finance whether engineers of his Department have made a survey of the pier at Reenard Point, Valentia Harbour, with a view to an improvement scheme being carried out there; if not, whether he will state why the survey has not been carried out, and if he will take steps to ensure that the matter is expedited.

Arrangements are being made for a meeting on the site at an early date of representatives of the Kerry County Council, the Department of Agriculture and the Sea Fisheries Association with an engineer of the Commissioners of Public Works in order to examine whether an improvement scheme to meet local requirements can be designed within a reasonable limit of cost.

I would ask the Parliamentary Secretary to consider the question as one of urgent importance. I went down there on Sunday and found that the fishermen plying between Valentia and Reenard Point find it impossible to negotiate that pier in the darkness. Even though there is a caretaker employed there, there is no lighting available. I would ask the Parliamentary Secretary, pending an arrangement, to have adequate lighting on the pier to facilitate the fishermen.

I have indicated to the Deputy in my reply that the whole matter is under consideration and I would ask him not to rush it.
