Vol. 110 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Combs.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn by the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union to the fact that the dumping in this country of large stocks of foreign-made combs is having an adverse effect on some of their members and whether, in view of this and of the fact that the native industry is capable of supplying the requirements of the home market in full, he will consider the advisability of placing a prohibition on the further importation of this class of goods.

Representations on this matter have been made to my Department. I have no evidence that dumping is taking place and on present information I am not satisfied that the company should not be able to carry on with the protection at present afforded to this industry.

Is the Minister not aware that workers are affected by dumping which has taken place and is he equally not aware that the factory is capable of supplying all the needs of the country without any importation at all?

If the Deputy will give me full particulars of any dumping that has taken place I shall have the matter reopened for further consideration.

Did the Deputy make any representations in regard to the International Labour Conference?

Not to you, at any rate.

You do not have to address them to me. Address them to the Government you are supporting.
