Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 8 Jun 1948

Vol. 111 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - European Recovery Plan.

asked the Taoiseach whether it is proposed to make a statement to the Dáil, concerning the European Recovery Plan and this country's position in relation thereto, and to provide an opportunity for discussion.

As the Deputy knows, aid by way of loan was offered to Ireland for the quarter April-June, 1948. When this offer was announced, the Minister for External Affairs made representations in Washington. The economic co-operation administrator and the State Department in Washington promised to consider the representations sympathetically, but no decision has so far been communicated to the Government.

The convention signed in Paris by the Minister for External Affairs, and the proposed bilateral agreement provided for by the Economic Co-operation Act, will be placed before the Dáil for ratification and there will then be an opportunity for a full discussion.
