Vol. 111 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increase of Sheep Population.

asked the Minister for Agriculture what steps he proposes to take to effect a rapid increase in the sheep population of Ireland.

As the decline in sheep numbers is due, partly at least, to compulsory tillage in counties where sheep rearing is extensively practised, it is probable that the numbers will increase gradually according as compulsory tillage regulations are relaxed, especially if the present prices for sheep and mutton are maintained.

Is the Minister aware that a number of sheep died during the severe winter of 1947?

I am so aware.

Why did the Minister not say so?

Sheep have been dying since the dawn of time.

Not to the extent to which they died in 1947.
