Vol. 111 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fat Cattle Standard.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the number and quality of fat cattle on offer in the Dublin cattle market have reached a very low level compared with previous years and what action will now be taken to restore previous standards.

The number of fat cattle on offer in the Dublin cattle market in the first five months of 1948 was much the same as in the corresponding period of 1947. The total number offered in the year 1947 was greater than the number on offer in any of the three previous years. As regards quality, the scarcity of suitable feeding stuffs affected the condition of cattle on offer from January to June in recent years. I hope to procure increased imports of feeding stuffs and fertilisers and thereby to bring about an improvement in the quality of our fat cattle.
