Vol. 111 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grants for River Cleaning.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has received reports of the flooding occurring on the Lower Wood River in South-west Westmeath due to the accumulation of turf mud from drainage operations by the county council and others in adjacent bogs and whether he proposes to make grants available for the cleaning of the river without undertaking any detailed surveys.

I have received representations on the subject referred to in the question, but I cannot accept responsibility for any flooding which may have been caused by the operations of the county council. If, however, the landholders concerned make an application under the rural improvements scheme and are prepared to contribute one-quarter of the cost of any work which may be undertaken under that scheme, the case will be considered on its merits.
