Vol. 111 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Release of Prisoners.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state (a) how many persons sentenced to imprisonment have been released since February 18th on his direction before the expiration of their sentences, or have had their sentences remitted; (b) the names of such persons and the offences for which they were convicted, and (c) the sentence imposed and the term served in each case.

During the period from 18th February to 31st May sentences of imprisonment were modified in 36 cases. In one case the sentence of imprisonment imposed was remitted in its entirety on the recommendation of the adjudicating justice, the defendant having gone to the United States.

Particulars with regard to the offences, the sentences imposed and the extent of mitigation granted have been prepared in tabular form and, with the Ceann Comhairle's permission, will be published in the Official Report. I do not propose to publish the names of the persons concerned. That has never been done and I do not think it would be a desirable precedent to establish.

These modifications of sentences were made at my direction after consideration and examination, in accordance with the normal practice, of appeals made by or on behalf of the sentenced persons.
