Vol. 111 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grant for Youghal Harbour.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will consider sanctioning a grant for the improvement of Youghal Harbour within the present financial year.

An application for State assistance to meet the cost of certain improvement works at Youghal Harbour was submitted to my Department in April, 1947. The harbour commissioners were asked in May, 1947, to indicate the extent to which the local authorities interested in the improvement of the harbour would be prepared to contribute towards the cost. When information on this point is received, the application for State assistance will be considered.

May I respectfully suggest that the harbour authorities are not in a position to contribute anything? Youghal harbour for the past seven years has been more or less derelict and, now that shipping is beginning to make its appearance there again, will the Minister be good enough to give a grant so as to enable them to get the berths into proper trim in order to allow vessels of 200 or 300 tons to unload? We are not in a position to give anything.

I understand that the application came before the Department in April, 1947. In May, 1947, the harbour commissioners were asked to indicate the extent to which local authorities interested in the improvement of the harbour would be prepared to contribute. We have not heard from them since May, 1947.
