asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (1) the number of (a) fat cattle, and (b) store cattle exported from this country to Great Britain during the past 12 months; (2) the number of (a) fat cattle, and (b) store cattle (if any) exported to the Continent of Europe during the same period, and (3) the price received per cwt. for each class of cattle named.

(1) and (2): In the 12 months ended 31st May, 1948, exports of fat cattle and store cattle to Great Britain and the Continent of Europe were as follow:—

(3): Official statistics of cattle actually exported are compiled by numbers and f.o.b., value. The price per cwt. is not available. Average prices, however, per cwt., live weight, at fairs throughout the country during the 12 months ended 31st March, 1948, were: (a) store cattle—72/-, (b) fat cattle—74/-, and (c) fat cattle at Dublin market during the same period—83/3.
