Vol. 112 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Servants' Remuneration.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate when it is proposed to increase the remuneration of all civil servants; and, further, if he will indicate the nature of the proposed increases.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply given on 15th June, 1948, to a similar question from Deputy Alfred Byrne (Official Reports, Volume 111, columns 933-934). Since the date of that question, Civil Service remuneration has been the subject of several discussions, but I am not yet in a position to give the information asked for by the Deputy. Examination of the matter is now, however, almost completed, and I hope that a decision will be reached in the near future.

Will the Minister say if the statement made by the Tánaiste, announcing increases recently to a certain section of the Civil Service, namely, Post Office officials, was made with his prior knowledge and approval?

Any statements about increases of remuneration that have been made, in so far as they have been made by any responsible person —in this instance by the Tánaiste— have been made with my approval.
