asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the number of unemployed registered at Listowel Employment Exchange on the 1st of July, 1947, and on the 1st of July, 1948, respectively.

The numbers of persons registered at the local office of my Department at Listowel on the 5th July, 1947, and the 3rd July 1948, the earliest dates in those months for which figures are available, were 637 and 795 respectively.

Under the Employment Period Orders at present in force certain occupiers of land of which the rateable valuation exceeds £2 but does not exceed £4 are excluded from the scope of these Orders; such persons were debarred from the receipt of unemployment assistance at the corresponding time last year by reason of the operation of the Employment Period Orders in force at that time.

The numbers of persons registered at the local office of my Department at Dingle on the 5th July, 1947, and the 3rd July, 1948, the earliest dates in those months for which figures are available, were 183 and 215 respectively.
