Vol. 112 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Balbriggan Hosiery.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that unemployment exists amongst Balbriggan hosiery factory workers owing to the unrestricted importation of hosiery goods; and, if so, whether he will impose adequate tariffs to ensure that Balbriggan hosiery goods can be readily sold; further, if he will indicate the present tariff which operates in respect of hosiery goods imported into Ireland.

I am aware that unemployment exists among hosiery factory workers in Balbriggan and that it is claimed that this unemployment is due to the importation of hosiery goods. Imports of silk and artificial silk hose are subject to quantitative control since 1st July, 1947, and unrestricted imports of other hosiery goods were permitted only during the period from 13th December, 1946, to 21st January, 1948. There is at present a tariff of 37½ per cent. full (25 per cent. preferential) ad valorem on all hosiery goods imported into this country. The question of affording additional protection to the hosiery industry is at present being examined.
