Vol. 112 No. 5

Written Answers to Questions. - Spraying Machines in Laoighis-Offaly.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of horsedrawn spraying machines in use in (1) Laoghis; and (2) Offaly; and further, whether Irish manufacturers are now in a position to meet all demands for such machines.

I presume the Deputy refers to horsedrawn potato spraying machines. The number of these in use in 1947 in the counties named is approximately as follows:—

(1) Laoighis

57

(2) Offaly

103

Irish manufacturers are not yet in a position to meet all demands for such machines owing to the difficulties in obtaining material and to shortage of skilled labour. The import duty on these sprayers has been suspended owing to the difficulties in supply, but I understand that the manufacturers are meeting demands much better than last year. If the Deputy has any particular cases of hardship in mind he might let me know and I will see whether anything can be done about supply.
