Vol. 112 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cahir Sewerage and Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the unsatisfactory condition of the water supply and sewerage system in the town of Cahir, County Tipperary; and, if so, whether he will have a survey made of the existing system with a view to its immediate improvement in view of the fact that there are recurrent epidemics of scarlet fever and diphtheria among the children of the town as a result of this defective system.

Representations were received from the local authority in October, 1946, in regard to the need for improvement of the Cahir water supply. The matter was investigated subsequently by the county engineer, who reported that while the water supply was not entirely adequate to meet the needs of the town, it was reasonably good in comparison with other towns in the county. The scheme was not included in the list of urgent works prepared by the county medical officer, who reported in 1943 that the water supply and sewerage system at Cahir was satisfactory, and it was decided, therefore, to defer consideration of the proposal. I have no information in regard to the need for improved sewerage facilities.
