Vol. 113 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Afforestation Scheme

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the lands of Killacloghane, Milltown, County Kerry, comprising 89 acres, are suitable for an afforestation scheme; and, if so, whether he will take the necessary steps to purchase this land at the earliest possible date with a view to initiating such a scheme.

The lands in question appear to comprise an existing wood and have not been offered for sale to the forestry division. An offer was, however, received of an area of 25 acres near this wood. That area by itself is, of course, much too small acquire for planting but perhaps the Deputy may be able to assist the Department to secure offers of sufficient additional land in the area to enable us to consider the question of establishing a forestry centre there.

Mr. Flynn

Is the Minister aware that the Milltown Parish Council are negotiating with the representatives of the Monteagle estate and that the representatives of that estate have offered this land for forestry purposes if the Land Commission will offer them a reasonable price and state their price?

The Land Commission have not been offered the area of wood indicated in the Deputy's question. Should such an offer come along, it will be considered.
