Vol. 113 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Bog Drainage.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that a portion of bog the property of James Sullivan, on the Drummond estate, Glencutane, County Kerry, was divided among 15 tenants in 1938; that the Land Commission at that time agreed to drain the bog in question, but beyond taking the preliminary steps have done nothing further in the matter; that as a result the tenants concerned have been forced to purchase turf banks at very high cost and at great distances from their homes; and, if so, whether he will ensure that these tenants are treated fairly and that their lands are drained in the immediate future.

Regulations providing for 15 parties were implemented in 1942 in respect of turbary on the holding of James Sullivan, at Glancuttaun Lower, County Kerry. The execution of the drainage works, sanctioned in connection with the regulations was not proceeded with, owing to the attitude of the tenant concerned who claimed compensation which the Land Commission were not prepared to pay. The matter has, at intervals, been under review and a report is now awaited following a meeting which I understand was arranged recently of all the parties involved.
