Vol. 113 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disposal of Onion Crop.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the farmers of Castlegregory, County Kerry, have about 2,000 tons of this year's onion crop left on their hands; that the onions are in danger of becoming useless if a market is not provided for them without delay; and if, in view of the fact that those hardworking farmers are dependent on the success of the onion crop for their livelihood, he will take such steps as will enable them to dispose of the onions at a remunerative price.

I am aware that the Castlegregory onion growers have not yet disposed of the bulk of their onions. Imports of onions are not being permitted so that the entire home market is at present reserved for Kerry onions. The growers have therefore a good opportunity of selling their crop at a fair price.
