Vol. 113 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rationing of Bread and Flour.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is correct that the present consumption of bread and flour is less than the estimated consumption possible under present rationing arrangements; and, if so, whether he will state the reasons for continuing the rationing of these foodstuffs; and, further, if he will make a statement on anticipated wheat supplies for the coming year.

The present consumption of flour is not less than the amount estimated to be necessary to supply the holders of ration documents with the quantities of bread and flour they are entitled to purchase and such evidence as is available indicates that consumption would materially increase if rationing were discontinued.

Wheat supplies in the coming year will be sufficient to maintain the present bread ration. It is estimated that more than half the quantity needed can be supplied in home-grown wheat and that approximately half of the quantity to be secured by importations will have been imported before 31st December next. Negotiations are proceeding for the purchase on the best possible terms of the quantity of imported wheat that has yet to be secured.
