Vol. 113 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irishmen's Claim on Superannuation Fund.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he is aware that Irishmen who had been employed up to 1942 by the Shanghai Municipal Council have not been refunded their payments to a superannuation fund run by that council; and, if so, whether he has taken or will take any action to secure fair treatment for these men.

The claims to which the Deputy refers form part of the financial obligations and liabilities of the International Settlement at Shanghai which were, under a treaty signed in 1943 between the Chinese Government and certain foreign Governments possessed of extra-territorial rights in China, assumed by the Chinese Government. A Liquidation Commission has been engaged in assessing the obligations of the Chinese Government under the relevant articles of the Treaty. I am doing everything possible to secure just satisfaction for the claims of these persons.
