Vol. 113 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of National Flag.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that the national flag was used on a number of premises by way of decoration during the 1798 commemoration ceremonies in Dublin, and that on public and private buildings the national flag was flown between the hours of sunset and sunrise, thereby causing considerable public annoyance and objection; if he will introduce proposals for legislation to govern the use and display of the national flag; and if, in the meantime, he will issue for general guidance directions in regard to the matter so that the misuse of the national flag may be avoided in the future.

I am aware that there are instances of the misuse of the national flag in public, and I agree with the Deputy that the issue of directions as to the proper procedure in regard to the flying of the flag is desirable. As the terms of such directions and the form in which they might be issued are matters for detailed inter-Departmental examination, I am having the matter further considered.

Will the Minister take the opportunity, in consultation with the other Departments, to notify the substance of the Army regulations governing the matter to the public? Will the Minister consider discussing the matter with the Department of Education, with a view to instruction being given to the children in the schools with regard to the same matter?

Some of the Departments concerned are Local Government and Education. It will be discussed with any appropriate authorities.
