Vol. 113 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shipping Rates for Coal.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the shipping freight rates for coal, in force since September 15th, from Scottish ports to Derry, are approximately 10/- per ton below freight rates to Buncrana, although sailing times to both ports are the same; that this unfair discrimination is diverting trade from Buncrana to Derry merchants, is causing loss of wages to Buncrana workers, and of revenue to the Buncrana Harbour Commissioners; and, if so, whether he proposes to take action in the matter.

I am aware of the position as indicated by the Deputy in his question and, following representations made to me some time ago, I am having the matter examined.

Has the Minister, in fact, any power to secure an adjustment of these freight rates, or does he propose to take action to rectify the position relating to freight rates, apart from making representations to the company concerned?

I will decide that when the examination is complete and I get the facts.
