Vol. 113 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rights of County Dublin Cottiers.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that a number of county council cottages have been acquired by the Dublin Corporation following the extension of the city boundary and that tenants of those cottages have been deprived of their right to purchase their cottages under the Labourers Act, 1936; and, if so, whether he will consider introducing proposals for legislation to amend the 1936 Act so as to give such tenants the same facilities as those in the rural part of County Dublin.

Mr. Murphy

The extension of the city boundary, which brought the cottages referred to by the Deputy under the ownership of the Dublin Corporation, was effected by the Local Government (Dublin) Act, 1930, that is to say, some six years before the passing of the Labourers Act, 1936, which introduced purchase schemes for cottages situated in county health districts. The tenants of these cottages, therefore, never had the right to purchase their cottages. I do not propose to introduce legislative proposals on the lines suggested by the Deputy.
