Vol. 113 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protection of Bread.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that in the Dublin City area bread is frequently distributed uncovered and subject to contamination, and if he will ensure that appropriate steps are taken in the future to see that bread in course of delivery from baker to consumer is protected against contamination.

I am aware of the unhygienic practice referred to in the first part of the question, and I strongly disapprove of it from the public health point of view. In matters of this kind the public can do a great deal to improve conditions by the exercise of selectivity in making their purchases. In regard to the second part, regulations providing inter alia for the prevention of contamination of food intended for sale for human consumption, power to make which was conferred by the recently enacted Health Act, are in course of preparation. I may add that the adoption of the use of cellophane paper for the purpose of wrapping bread is most desirable, and any producer intending to introduce it will receive every encouragement from my Department.
