asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the number of persons employed as labourers on reafforestation as distinct from forest supervision for the last available 12 months' period (a) in the winter season and (b) in the summer season.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in respect of afforestation (a) the number of acres planted or replanted in 1938, 1939 and 1948, and (b) the number of persons other than supervising staffs employed on reafforestation in the years 1938, 1939 and 1948 in summer and winter, respectively.

With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I propose to take together Questions Nos. 19 and 20.

The information can be given in relation only to planting seasons, and not to calendar years. The required figures are: 1937-38, 7,388¾ acres; 1938-39, 7,603¼ acres; 1947-48, 6,005 acres.

In 1948-49 it is expected that over 8,000 acres will be planted.

In the season 1948-49 the minimum (summer period) number of labourers was 1,821; the maximum (winter period) is 2,300.
