Vol. 114 No. 3

Written Answers. - Westmeath Employment and Improvement Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount of money spent in each of the financial years 1939-40 to 1948-49 in County Westmeath on minor employment schemes and rural improvement schemes; and if he will state the number of these schemes and their location in each year.

Particulars are given below of the number of minor employment schemes and rural improvement schemes sanctioned in County Westmeath in each of the years 1939-40 to 1948-49; the expenditure on these services each year up to 1947-48; and an estimate of the expenditure in the current financial year. Similar figures are given in respect of bog development schemes for works on roads and drains serving bogs used by landholders and other private producers.

It should be noted that the expenditure in any financial year includes the payment of balances in respect of schemes sanctioned in the previous year.

As the total number of schemes sanctioned in the years under review was 571, the time and expense involved in compiling particulars of their location would not be justified by the utility of the information.
